Providing window covering creation and installation services to protect bird populations from window strikes.

About Us

Hi! My name is Tyler, I am a forestry professional by day and also operate a small business, Urban Ecological Solutions, out of South-Western Ontario, dedicated to protecting our local ecosystem. As for our BirdProtect window coverings, we specialize in creating and installing high-quality, pattern-regulated vinyl decals to the exterior of residential and commercial windows to effectively deter bird-window strikes. Our Mission: To provide cost-effective solutions regarding the safety and health of bird populations and environmental sustainability within urbanized settings.

Our Work

Window collisions are the #2 leading cause of human-impacted bird deaths, resulting in over 1 billion casualties every year. Birds cannot perceive clear or reflective glass, often colliding with windows trying to reach nearby foliage. What We Provide:Patterned & Custom Vinyl Decal Installation: Expertly applied to residential and low-rise commercial windows.Free Quotes and Site Visits: For residents and businesses within the Waterloo Region, Ontario.Scientifically Proven Spacing: We strictly follow industry-standard spacing guidelines (such as the 5cm × 5cm or 5cm × 10cm rules) to maximize deterrence.High-Risk Targeting: We help identify and secure critical zones, especially large continuous windowpanes near ravines, wetlands, peri-urban areas, or mature forests.Who We Serve:-Environmentally conscious homeowners looking to protect local wildlife.-Small businesses striving for a "greener", sustainable brand image.-Property managers of city, government, and commercial buildings.-Contractors looking to meet modern building requirements.Local Regulations & Legislation:
While residential retrofits are not yet legally mandated by law in the SW Ontario area, many of the municipalities are certified Bird Friendly Cities. Notably, Guelph mandates bird-safe glass for new builds within 120 meters of natural heritage areas. Also, the federal Migratory Birds Convention Act places legal liability on property owners if their buildings are known to repeatedly harm protected species. Retrofitting your windows provides a strong, proactive defense for both the birds and your property.
Cost
Depending on complexity of installation and pattern design, costs range from $7-12 per square foot of covering area.

Applicable Research

Our collision-prevention techniques are backed by peer-reviewed field research demonstrating that visible window markers drastically minimize avian mortality.Key Scientific Findings
Lysyk et al. (2026): Confirmed that uniform window treatments following proper spacing standards (5cm × 5cm) reduce collisions by approximately 98% compared to untreated glass.
Riggs et al. (2022): A long-term field study verified that applying market-standard marker treatments yielded a 64% absolute reduction in total annual bird collisions.Ocampo-Peñuela et al. (2021): Residential-scale testing demonstrated an 84% reduction in window collision events following targeted decal applications.Ribeiro & Piratelli (2020): Field testing proved that circular-shaped decals are highly effective, resulting in zero recorded accidents on treated panes compared to untreated control windows.Sheng et al. (2024): Research confirms that while bird-safe patterns impact view clarity slightly, stripe patterns balance aesthetic quality beautifully, and a vast majority of occupants are highly willing to accept minor adjustments to save bird lives.
